Leora Baron has been selected to head UNLV's Teaching and Learning Center, university President Carol C. Harter announced Thursday (June 27).
Baron, currently director of the Academy for the Art of Teaching at Florida International University in Miami, will begin her duties at UNLV in September.
UNLV's Teaching and Learning Center provides programs for faculty members that are designed to improve the quality of teaching at UNLV by addressing issues such as the integration of technology into the classroom.
"Dr. Baron is an extremely capable and energetic educator who will enhance and expand the programs already in place at the Teaching and Learning Center," said UNLV Provost Raymond Alden.
Baron said, "I am especially impressed by UNLV's sincere commitment to excellence in teaching and learning and the enthusiasm expressed by everyone involved. I look forward to an active and productive relationship between the TLC and the university community."
While at Florida International, Baron designed and implemented faculty development workshops on subjects such as the application of technology to instruction. She also established leadership development programs and retreats for department chairs as well as mentoring programs for junior faculty members.
She has extensive experience as a faculty member and administrator at William Penn College and Seton Hill College. Baron has earned three degrees from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst -- a doctoral degree in education in 1973, a master's degree in linguistics in 1971, and a bachelor's degree in English-journalism in 1970.
