Academic achievement, campus leadership and uncommon community service will be on display at UNLV's annual African Heritage Awards, set for Sunday, May 7 at 4 p.m. at the Cox Pavilion. The awards event, now in its 21 st year, honors the outstanding achievements of UNLV students of African heritage. Nevada State Senator Steven Horsford will present a special keynote address at the awards reception, sponsored by the UNLV Alliance of Professionals of African Heritage.
Top awards scheduled for presentation at the ceremony include the Roosevelt Fitzgerald Outstanding Student Awards, honoring academic performance, campus leadership and participation in university and community activities. Four students will receive the prestigious award, named in honor of former UNLV anthropology professor and director of ethnic studies Roosevelt Fitzgerald.
Four outstanding graduate and undergraduate students will receive the Thomas Wilson Community Service Awards. These honors, awarded based upon citizenship and involvement in service activities as well as academic performance, are named for UNLV's first African-American professor of education.
