The spring 1998 UNLV University Forum lecture series concludes this month with presentations on Australian folklore and developments in cold atom technology.
Martyn Wyndham-Read, a writer and performer, will share stories and songs from Australian folklore in a lecture and recital titled "Folk Song and Lore of Australia" on April 20.
A leading authority on the subject, Wyndham-Read will weave together songs, bush poetry, anecdotes from the outback, historical footnotes, and comments on Australian life as a means of offering insight on the country's culture and history.
On April 27, "What's Hot with Cold Atoms" will be UNLV physics professor Bernard Zygelman's topic of discussion as he reviews recent progress on efforts to produce ultra-cold atoms in the laboratory.
In a presentation geared to the layperson, Zygelman will demonstrate how current developments may play a role in spawning novel technology, such as the matter laser and quantum computers.
All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public. Both the April 20 and April 27 lectures are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of UNLV's Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and underwritten by the UNLV Foundation. For additional information on the series, call 895-3401.
