Artist Gene Redden will present a solo show of his work June 21 through July 30 at the Jesse Metcalf Gallery on the second floor of the Richard Tam Alumni Center at UNLV. A reception with the artist is set for June 24, 6-8 p.m. The theme of the show is "Roots of My Soul."
Redden was born in Ann Arbor, Mich. He started painting at the age of 14, expressing himself through vivid colors and styles, his oil paintings capturing crowd scenes and sporting events.
While living in Vicenza, Italy, Redden discovered the works of Dada and Surrealism. The Surrealists influenced Redden in his concepts of color and isolated subject matter.
After returning to the United States, Redden completed a degree in art at Western Michigan University. He studied film and art at Western Michigan with master painter Reginald Gammon.
Redden completed a master of art degree, then taught at Kalamazoo Art Institute, Western Michigan University, and Santa Monica College. He is currently teaching communication at UNLV.
Redden's art works have been shown in Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, and California. They have also been featured on record album covers.
"I discovered art is infinity; its beginning is a concept with no ending," Redden says. "It reflects, as a mirror, life."
