Richard Flaherty, an accounting professor at Arizona State University, has been selected to head UNLV's College of Business, UNLV President Carol C. Harter announced Tuesday (June 15).
Flaherty will begin his new job July 15.
"Richard Flaherty is a leader in the field of business education and as such is the right person to lead our College of Business into the next millennium," Harter said. "He is well respected among business educators, and I believe he will work most effectively with the greater business community."
Flaherty, who has been at Arizona State since 1978, served as director of the School of Accountancy there from 1988 to 1993. In 1998, he received the undergraduate teaching excellence award given annually to one faculty member in the school.
"Dr. Flaherty not only has excellent administrative skills, but also is a first-rate teacher, a trait important here at UNLV as we pride ourselves on being student-centered," said Provost Douglas Ferraro.
Before joining the faculty at Arizona State, he taught at the University of Illinois and at Oklahoma State University.
Flaherty is co-author of the textbook, Intermediate Accounting, now in its sixth edition. He also is the author of several articles.
In 1994 he was named one of the 100 most influential persons in the accounting profession by Accounting Today.
He served as executive director of the Accounting Education Change Commission from 1993 to 1996. He was project director of the American Accounting Association's research project on accounting education from 1974 to 1977.
Flaherty earned his doctoral degree in business administration from the University of Kansas in 1971. He also earned a master's degree in accounting and a bachelor of science degree from the University of Kansas.
