"The Role of Animals in Ancient Greek Mythology and Life: Or The Polis Meets Wild Kingdom" will be the topic of the Nov. 5 University Forum lecture.
Kenneth Kitchell, professor of classical humanities at the University of Massachusetts, will present the slide-illustrated lecture.
Kitchell will discuss why animals played such an important role in the ancient Greek culture from adornment on coins, architecture, vases, and other artworks to folklore about half-human, half-animal creatures. His talk will focus on the reasons why the Greeks spent a great deal of energy deciding where the human world ended and the animal world began.
On Nov. 15, Brad Eden, principal cataloger with the UNLV Library and a specialist in medieval studies, will present an evening of medieval music.
Eden will explain to the audience the history of this genre and will display examples of the musical style. In addition, the presentation will include a live performance of medieval music by a local group.
Both lectures begin at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and is underwritten by the Lodge Kalafatis Trust and the UNLV Foundation. For more information on the series, call 895-3401 or send an E-mail to: forum@nevada.edu.
