Representatives from UNLV's fraternities and sororities will attend an alcohol education summit Oct. 19-20, which is being sponsored by the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The summit will be held at Potosi Pines Camp, which is located on the outskirts of Las Vegas at the base of Mt. Potosi.
During the summit, approximately 50 UNLV undergraduate students, who are members of the various Greek chapters on campus, will discuss ways to identify and reduce high-risk drinking behaviors among members of their organizations.
"UNLV was one of six universities nationwide selected for the honor of hosting this interactive summit," said Pete Glass, UNLV's program coordinator for Greek life. "The Greek leadership saw this as an excellent opportunity for students, university administrators, and alumni to work together to openly identify and address alcohol-related issues specific to UNLV and the fraternity and sorority communities."
Glass said the curriculum emphasizes community building, leadership development, values-based decision making, and creating positive change for the common good.
"The goal is for the participants to leave the program with new skills, increased motivation, and a plan of action for creating change within their Greek communities," he said.
The other universities that also are holding the summit this year are Vanderbilt University, Washington and Lee University, the University of Florida, Iowa State University, and North Dakota State University.
