Trombonists from across the United States will gather on the UNLV Ham Hall Concert stage at 2 p.m. Nov. 2 for the 19th annual 76 Trombones +4 Concert. The massed trombone choir of more than 100 will treat the audience to an afternoon of light classics and jazz standards. All proceeds will support the Abe Nole music scholarship fund at UNLV. Advanced sale general admission tickets to the concert are $10; tickets for students, seniors and military are $7, and are on sale at the Performing Arts Center Box Office or by calling 895-ARTS (2787).
The Abe Nole Scholarship Fund was established in memory of one of Las Vegas' most beloved musicians. Nole arranged and wrote for his 'Bonehead' band in the 60s and the 70s, which involved many of the trombonists in Las Vegas. When he passed away in 1985, several local trombonists decided to organize a mass trombone concert in his honor. Eighty professional trombonists from Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco appeared in the first concert. Participation has grown through the years to include trombonists from all over the country and as far away as Japan.
Proceeds from the 76 Trombones +4 Concert go to the UNLV Abe Nole Scholarship Fund to assist trombone music majors. The first Abe Nole scholar enrolled in the fall of 1990 and to date, more than 20 scholarships have been awarded.
