College of Engineering seniors showcase commercially viable inventions.

Mobile Spray Painting App: Mikhak Misaghian developed a mobile app that simulates spray painting on a virtual 3D object. The app can be used as a game or a spray paint simulator. It allows allow a user to practice with precision or paint companies to show customers sample paint colors. First place in the computer science category.

Students from the UNLV Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering put their undergraduate education to the test at the fall 2012 Fred and Harriet Cox Senior Design Competition. Engineering students from 32 teams displayed their creations with a focus on producing commercially viable projects. The competition introduces students to the spirit of entrepreneurship and the benefits of commercial application. The event is judged by local industry representatives and has thousands of dollars in prize money on the line.

Ninth Island Wave Pool: This barreling, circular wave pool allows a surfer to ride the waves on a continuous loop. The group hopes to sell the concept to a casino-resort property or one of the water parks planned for Southern Nevada. Waves can reach up to six feet, but vary in size and power. Team members included Gregory Friesmuth, Erick Matta, Daniel Miller and Juan Carolo Pascua. First place in the civil engineering category.

Smart Phone Augmented Reality Puzzle Performer: Student Raymond Imber shows his creation to Rama Venkat, interim dean of Engineering, and professor Evangelos Yfantis. Imber used “augmented reality” software to develop a game for smart phones. This technology allows computer-generated images to be superimposed onto a real-world environment or image. In Imber’s game, players must guide virtual creatures through a real-world environment. Second place in the computer science category.

Automatic Bottle Capper: A team of engineering students, who also happen to be home brewing hobbyists, developed a small appliance for home brewers to cap their bottles as efficiently as manufacturers. The bottle capper applies the proper amount of force without shattering the glass. The device is also taps into social media by sending a Tweet each time a bottle is capped. M.A.S.S. (Mechanical Arm Support System): This tool balancer redistributes the weight of a tool, making it feel light or weightless. Each year, millions of people suffer from work-related injuries stemming from improper lifting methods, overexertion or repetitive motions. The M.A.S.S., which is worn by a user, transfers the weight of an object closer to the core, where muscles are stronger and more suited for lifting. The team, students Jian Paolo Buzar, Hugo Chiang and Vincent Poon, won first place in the

Sock Assist: Millions of people around the world suffer from debilitating diseases and injures that make the simplest things, such as putting on your own socks, difficult. The user, in a seated position, will place their foot between two sidewalls. A sock applicator will move up their foot and fall within the contour of the legs. Engineering students Mike Arview, Wareh Farass, Caleb Maher and Sammy Zaidi developed this project.

The energy is stored in “super capacitors,” which have a sensor and transmitter and can collect large amounts of data. Such a device could help researchers and scientists collect data out in the field without the use of batteries. Team members: Sean Crippen, Eduardo Olivares, Yelthin Orochena and Angusman Roy. First place in the electrical engineering category and the sustainability award

Water Bender-The Automatic Pool Filter Cleaner: The user-friendly, affordable device cleans pool filters while saving water. Currently, pool owners have to clean their pool filters by hand, which is messy and wasteful. The pool owner connects the device to a standard garden hose, attaches the filter on a roller axle, and opens the spray valve. The Water Bender uses high-pressure jets of water to remove dirt from each fold. Team members: Michael Baird, Shelby E. Nelson and Praveen Raj.
