Busy is good — and typical — at Rebel Copy & Send in the Student Union.
An outpost of the newly named integrated graphics services (known for many years as reprographics), the center may be small, but a lot gets accomplished in that packed space.
Forgot to print out a second copy of that paper you’re about to turn in?
Drop by Rebel Copy & Send for a photocopy and treat yourself to a Jamba Juice while you’re waiting.
Just realized you forgot to ship your mother-in-law’s birthday present? Rebel Copy & Send handles Fed Ex shipping. And if you’re particularly tardy, overnight shipping is available.
Preparing a course pack for fall semester? Bring it by Rebel Copy & Send. They’ll handle the reproduction for you. In fact, now would be a very good time to do that. May 14 is the deadline for all summer sessions, while July 15 is the deadline for the fall semester.
“Most jobs we can turn around quickly, though course packs take several days,” said Chelsea Garcia, a reprographics technician II. She worked at Rebel Copy & Send as a student for five years and then stayed on as a full-time employee after earning her bachelor’s degree in journalism and media studies in 2017. “For small jobs, say 50 copies of a flier, it usually only takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on whether there is another job ahead of yours. We do both black-and-white and color copying.”
Large projects may need to be go over to the main integrated graphics services (IGS) office, located behind Lied Library. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth stopping by Rebel Copy & Send. They will help you start the process.
“We try to make it as easy as possible for the customers,” said copy center representative Frank Waterman. “We want to streamline the process for you.”
Making things easy for the UNLV community is the reason IGS launched Rebel Copy & Send in 2015, said Keith Spain, reprographics supervisor. “The Student Union is a building many on campus visit several days a week. Having a shop there means students, faculty, and staff can drop by on their way to or from meetings or can place an order with us and then grab some lunch while they are waiting.”
IGS prices often are much cheaper than at off-campus businesses. That’s even true for Fed Ex services, Garcia said. While Fed Ex rules don’t allow staff to package your shipment for you, they can sell you packing materials, including boxes and bubble wrap, to help you out.
One tip from Garcia: To receive the quickest service, stop by Rebel Copy & Send after 5 p.m., typically the time when there are the fewest customers. The center’s busiest time usually is between noon and 2 p.m.
One of the interesting things about working at Rebel Copy & Send is the unusual people employees sometimes meet, Garcia said, though one of the more interesting drop-ins recently wasn’t exactly human.
She recently saw quick movement out of the corner of her eye but hadn’t had time to process it when a customer walked up and said, “Did you guys know that a bunny just ran into your shop?”
Sure enough, they found a fluffy visitor had scampered into a corner and curled up in a ball. Employees placed it in an empty paper box, carried it outside, and freed it. “Usually, it’s interesting people we meet,” Garcia said. “This was a first.”
Rebel Copy & Send’s normal hours are 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Hours can vary during summer, school breaks, and holidays. Contact: 702-895-0948.
