Savvy Miller knew she wanted to be a Rebel when she first toured campus as a high school sophomore. The greenery and abundance of flowers around campus reminded her of home in Portland, immediately making a lasting connection. While the greenery is what welcomed her, it was the community that kept her when she started her academic journey in pre-nursing.
Why did you choose UNLV?
I fell in love with its beauty. It was nothing like any other school I've toured, and I was able to get affordable tuition thanks to the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)! Not only was the campus beautiful, but it had so much to offer and it is not too crowded.
How did the location impact your decision to attend UNLV?
It was perfect! Great opportunity to move out of the state and be immersed in a new place to live, but it also was not all the way across the country. I was able to drive here and back when moving on both occasions.
How have you benefited from the Las Vegas location?
It's very convenient that UNLV is right on the strip, so I don't really need to venture out of a five-mile radius. I have had no problem finding jobs, as well as multiple volunteering opportunities.
Have you been mentored and/or inspired by a faculty member? Who were they and how did they make an impact?
Yes, Leslie Venzuela. She took me under her wing and showed me the ways of journalism. I'm able to work in a professional environment, and my schedule is super flexible! I'm very grateful for the chance she has given me to be her assistant, as well as how much she's taught me through the Student Recreation and Wellness Center yoga classes. If it weren't for her, I wouldn't have discovered yoga as my new passion.
What is your favorite memory or experience at UNLV?
There's too many to count, honestly. If I had to choose one I'd choose going to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center yoga classes with my friends.
What is the number one reason a future student should consider UNLV?
Convenience. You're able to have the time of your life, enjoy new foods, make so many different types of friends, all the while paying a fraction of the cost of other schools!
What student organizations, activities, or resources have you been involved with outside the classroom?
Club 33 (Disney Club), Honors College, Student Recreation and Wellness Center Group Classes, UNLV CSUN Party in the Pida events.
What else should we know?
The campus is so refreshing and it reminds me of home...it's one of the only places in all of Las Vegas with so much grass and wildlife.
