Living, studying and working on campus is a family affair for the Solomons. Freshman Alana now lives in the residence halls. Her sister, Shaina, also lived on campus while working on her bachelor's degree. She is now a UNLV Boyd School of Law school student. Her mother, Jocelyn, is getting her master's of social work and her dad, Paul, works at the Environmental Protection Agency, which is housed on campus. UNLV freshman Alana Solomon is among the students living on campus this semester. UNLV InterVarsity Christian Fellowship volunteers helped carry belongings into the Tonopah Residence Complex.
Alana, center, and her parents, Paul and Jocelyn, unload the family van. She was among more than 80 students who received a first-time offered Clark County Housing Scholarship, which awards $1,000 per semester in financial aid to students agreed to live on campus for one academic year.
Alana Solomon waits for the next elevator as her family and student volunteers move her belongings. Her older sister also lived on campus. “We really feel that just because they live so close to home they should not miss out on campus life,” mom Jocelyn said. “It’s a time to grow and be independent and they have make their own decisions.”
On-campus housing can accommodate about 2,000 students. Alana is among nearly 400 Nevada students living on campus.

Alana affixes a message board to her residence hall door as her mother, Jocelyn, watches. You may catch the Solomons having lunch together in the student union but Alana Solomon’s parents have a rule: “Have lunch with us but dinner with others,” Jocelyn said.
