Sierra Sammons of the Graduate College began as a student employee and eventually worked her way into a fulltime job managing the graduate assistant program.
Why are you at UNLV?
UNLV is world-renowned for its excellence in higher education and has given me the opportunity to work with devoted staff and students. I couldn't ask for a better work environment.
What drew you to your field?
I started at the Graduate College as a student worker assisting with the graduate assistant program. During those three years, I became passionate for the program as I saw the impact it had on each student's future. Without this program many students wouldn't receive the financial support necessary to reach their scholastic goals.
What is a misconception many people have about your field?
Many do not understand that we are considered the "middleman" when it comes to hiring GAs. We work very closely with each department and human resources/payroll in order to complete all of the hiring documents.

One tip for success.
Step outside your comfort zone. It's important to consistently challenge yourself and broaden your horizons. It brings a new perspective to your life/career.
Where did you grow up?
A small town in Montana named Cut Bank. It's located 40 miles east of Glacier National Park and 30 miles south of the Canadian border.
What has been the proudest moment of your life?
Receiving my bachelor's degree in hospitality management.
Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you.
I know how to drive a Peterbilt semi-truck and operate a Case IH combine for wheat harvest.
Who is your hero?
My parents immediately pop into my mind. They have developed me into the woman I am today and taught me the importance of a hard work ethic. They inspire me to continuously better myself and reach the goals that I set. They smother me with support, love, and laughter.
I also could mention Bobby "Bones," a radio talk show host based out of Nashville, Tenn. His talk show is anything but the ordinary. He focuses on the importance of being real with others and true to yourself. He's proof that persistence and passion will bring success. The show participates in many charity events and provides quality entertainment for millions of listeners.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy yoga, spending time at the lake, and hiking.
