Troy Wailehua
Administrative Assistant IV?
Thomas & Mack Center
Rebel Since: 2007
What you do: I work in the Thomas & Mack ticket office. I handle payment vouchers, work with promoters, order ticket stock and envelopes, and a variety of other things. I love the job. I love working with the promoters. I like being in the ticket office, which is the first contact some members of the public have with UNLV.
A student, too: I earned a BS in sports recreation management in 2007. I had started working in the ticket office in January of that year as an intern. When I graduated in May, they offered me a full-time job.
Now I'm working toward a master's degree in the hospitality administration program.
Future plans: I just recently achieved the admin assistant IV classification. Maybe sometime in the future I'll move into the hotel industry, but I'm hoping that when I earn my master's degree I'll be able to move up within the university.
Tip for new employees: Just try to absorb as much information as you can and get as much experience as possible.
A perfect day at work: Running a smooth ticket office. Happy customers. No refund issues. No rushing. No students showing up late for work.
And a perfect day off: Stay home and sleep in. It's a good day off if I can sleep until noon or one.
People would be surprised to learn: I'm from Hawaii. I grew up on Oahu. I love Las Vegas. When I first moved here, I couldn't imagine I would ever say that, but now I can't see myself living any place else. I can always visit Hawaii. The only thing I really miss is the beach.
Dream vacation: People always say Hawaii, I know. I'd like to go on a tour of Europe. I've always wanted to go overseas. I want to see how people live in other places.
Favorite movie: Gladiator with Russell Crowe. The whole story of how his general fell from grace and then came back to prominence interests me.
What People Nominating Him for the Award Had to Say
In the nomination form, Charles Soberinsky, associate facility director - ticket operations, wrote:
"The hopes I had for Troy when he was hired have come true over the years.
"It is his constant desire to learn more functions and serve that has allowed him to grow not only as an employee, but as a person. Over the last few years Troy has earned the respect of all employees within the ticket office as well as the building. He is a pleasure to work with on a daily basis."
