CSUN is a familiar acronym around campus but not everyone may know how the organization works. It’s time to learn about the student leaders, branches, and resources of CSUN.
The Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (CSUN) is UNLV’s undergraduate student government. Its mission is to empower the voice of the undergraduate student population, provide resources to enhance the student experience, and help build community on the UNLV campus.
CSUN has many wonderful students involved to make their mission a reality and is led by Student Body President Caren Royce Yap, and Student Body Vice President Abraham Lugo.
Yap is responsible for creating the budget for the fiscal year, maintaining relations with administration and the Nevada System of Higher Education, and is the head representative for undergraduate students.
Lugo manages all the Executive departments, from marketing to campus life. He most consistently works towards equity among immigrant rights in the U.S., youth-led antiracism work, and becoming a voice for the LGBTQIA+ community.
CSUN has three branches, each with its own set of responsibilities: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.
The Executive Branch oversees all CSUN activities, marketing efforts, elections, legislative lobbying trips, and various academic/research collaborations. This branch consists of the student body president, vice president, CSUN secretary, attorney general, chief of staff, and the four departments (Marketing and Social Media, Student Engagement, Campus Life, and Elections and Operations). The Executive Board elections for the president and vice president take place every spring semester.
The Legislative Branch is made up of the Senate president and 25 Senators from all nine colleges. These senators are the official representatives of each of their colleges and vote on various bills and funding proposals throughout the year. They are also responsible for engaging the members of their colleges through email, surveys, and in-person mixers. Senate elections take place each fall semester.
The UNLV/CSUN Preschool: A model inclusive early childhood program that serves children of students per semester and, faculty, staff, and the surrounding campus community on a year-round schedule.
UNLV Food Pantry: The year-round UNLV Food Pantry provides non-perishable items to university students, staff, and faculty who need additional food.
CARE Survivor Fund: An emergency survivor fund available to UNLV students who have had financial impacts due to Interpersonal Violence
