How do you get the best of both worlds? For business major and Las Vegas native Jordyn Styck the answer is simple: Choose UNLV. 

Coming from a family of Rebels, UNLV gave her the opportunity to build herself a new community while still staying part of the one she had before she started college. 

Why UNLV?

I chose UNLV because everyone in my family went to UNLV. My parents were involved when they went to school here — my mom (Cheryl Styck, ’82) was even the baton twirler long ago. Both of my brothers (Kyle, ’16, and Matt, ’20) attended UNLV and were involved on campus. Our parents would take us to all the sporting events on campus when we were growing up to get us excited to come here. Pride in coming to UNLV was something our parents raised us on.

What have you been involved with outside of the classroom?

I am part of the Honors College here at UNLV. I also attend a lot of sporting events, as well. My parents also don’t miss any of them either even though they graduated forever ago.

Biggest challenge?

Understanding that we get to create our own path in life. Going through my first year at UNLV allowed me to discover more in life.

Best part about being in Las Vegas for college?

I have benefited from the location because in Las Vegas there are organizations that help make the community stronger, and I’ve been able to volunteer at places like the Las Vegas rescue mission, which helps our homeless community, and Spread the Word, which collects and cleans up books for children in the Las Vegas community.

Number one reason a future student should consider UNLV?

UNLV is a university filled with diverse people and opportunities. Being located in one of the most famous cities in the world, it provides opportunities for students to get experience in internships, research projects, and jobs.

Advice to survive the first semester?

My advice to survive your first semester is read the syllabus and use the many resources offered on campus. These items will guide you through classes and help you understand what’s expected in college.
