For 29 years, Corporate Challenge has been a healthy way for companies and organizations to be active in the community while adding a social component for those who want to volunteer or cheer on their colleagues from the sidelines. This past spring, the City of Las Vegas offered 36 different events during the 11-week competition.
UNLV participated in the "A" division against large companies such as Zappos and Ceasars. The team often faced off against alumni now working in the Las Vegas Valley. "It is rewarding to see (alumni) working in the community," said Kathy Lauckner, UNLV's Corporate Challenge organizer and project coordinator for the School of Environmental and Public Affairs.
Team-UNLV had approximately 200 competitors and placed 8th overall. UNLV won first place in 8 ball; table tennis; and the bike race. The swimming and race walk teams placed second. Every competitor who placed at least sixth in an event won points for Team-UNLV. The team also earned an extra 11 points (which is a gold medal, plus one) for its community volunteerism and blood drive donations.
UNLV plans to compete in the 2015 Challenge. You may form teams now and get practicing, but look for recruitment for captains and team members to begin in December.
