Bretson Mann stood out to his fellow employees in the College of Sciences. So much so, they nominated him as the 2023 Classified Staff Rookie of the Year for his time as the administrative assistant (IV) in the dean’s office. And he's recently risen up to become the college's assistant business manager.
Mann, who hails from Atlanta, earned a B.S. in anthropology from Georgia State University in 2019. Prior to moving to Las Vegas — and maybe a surprise to some colleagues — Mann moonlighted as a DJ for underground house and techno parties. He also worked as a digital marketer and office manager for private businesses.
Mann began working at UNLV in December 2020 and has been, according to one nominator, instrumental in hiring and financial processes within the College of Sciences. He’s also been quick to help other units when there are staff vacancies.
“Bretson is always willing to learn new things and step in when the need arises,” says nominator and College of Sciences business manager Katrina Switalski. “Because of his knowledge and excellent attitude, he is highly respected in the College of Sciences and everyone is happy to work with him. The College of Sciences has approximately 200 faculty, staff, and other professionals. I can think of no better candidate for the Classified Staff Rookie of the Year Award.”
Can you tell us a little about your daily responsibilities?
I work closely with other dean’s office staff to oversee the daily HR and financial operations of the college, including its departments and centers. I work with the other classified and professional staff within our departments to resolve issues and make sure the needs of our faculty, staff, and students are met.
Why did you choose to work at UNLV?
Previously, I worked in the private sector but was interested in pursuing a career in the higher education space. Universities often provide a community environment that is hard to find in other places. That aspect, coupled with the desire to challenge myself by learning something totally new, led me to apply for jobs on campus.
Do you have any advice for an employee just starting at UNLV?
Be curious and ask questions. Seeking out information and guidance from those who are receptive provides the opportunity to build good relationships with other units across campus, something that is invaluable in the long run.
What’s one of your favorite things about this job?
The people – I’m surrounded by such a supportive and fun group that it makes coming to work and doing the job easy. The work we do ultimately supports the success of the faculty and students of UNLV, which is very rewarding.
How do you feel about being recognized as Rookie of the Year?
I am very grateful to my colleagues for the nomination and the committee for selecting me; the recognition means a lot.
What do you like to do for fun, or do you have any special hobbies?
Trying new restaurants with my partner, playing board games, and learning about whatever new hobby catches my attention that month, whether it be printmaking, animation, music ... I’m a bit all over the place when it comes to that.
Do you have a current TV show, movie, or book to recommend?
The entire Dune series is worth the read, especially with the second movie on the way.
