Whitney Elks, Declan Feery, Celica Cosme, Kavita Batra, Charles St. Hill, and Ovunc Bardakcioglu (all Medicine) presented their study, “Comparison of Surgical Treatment Patterns and Temporal Trends for Stage I-III Invasive Rectal Adenocarcinoma among Regions in the United States,” at the Society of Black Academic Surgeons. This study utilized the National Cancer Database and found that the proportion of sphincter preserving surgery (SPS) has been trending upward in recent years with a subsequent decline in abdominoperineal resection (APR) cases. Elks is a medical resident in the General Surgery department.
