Tina Vo (Teaching and Learning) and doctoral students/Holmes Scholars Mayra Marquez-Mendez (Educational Psychology, Leadership and Higher Education), Adjoa Mensah (Teaching and Learning) and Monique Soma (Post-secondary Career and Technical Education) presented their research titled “Fostering STEM career pathways by creating a Geoscience Education Community around local geologic phenomena” at the NARST 96th Annual International Conference in Chicago. The research was possible through the GEOPaths NSF Grant project headed by Pamela Burnley (GeoScience). The goal of this research project is to 1) Build a professional earth science learning community to facilitate collaboration between local high school teachers and UNLV faculty and students; 2) Generate high school earth science curriculum materials based on the spectacular local geologic resources that will provide STEM education while also introducing potential career paths in the Earth sciences; 3) Create a service learning course that will pair undergraduate ‘geoscience ambassadors’ with high school classes that are utilizing the newly developed curriculum materials; and 4) Engage high school students and teachers in locally relevant geoscience research projects
