Soumya Upadhyay and Chris Cochran (both Health Care Administration) recently presented a research paper at the 79th annual Academy of Management Meeting in Boston. The paper is titled "Hospital Cultural Competency and Patient Safety Culture Attributes." Given the increase in racial and ethnic diversity in the United States, hospitals face a challenge in terms of providing safe and high-quality care to minority patients. Cultural competency can be used as a resourceful strategy to provide safe care and improve patient safety culture. This study finds that robust cultural competency hospitals have a better safety culture as compared to medium- or low-cultural competency hospitals.
