Dr. Sonal Shah (Dental) presented a poster titled "A Mandibular Radiolucency Leads to Extra-Oral Findings and an Unexpected Multiple Myeloma Diagnosis" during the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology annual meeting earlier this month. The case focused on a 49-year-old female who was initially referred to oral surgery for extractions of upper teeth. However, a large radiolucency was incidentally discovered in the mandible and biopsied, yielding a diagnosis of an atypical plasma cell proliferation or plasmacytoma. This raised suspicions of multiple myeloma that were later confirmed using CTs and MRIs. The scans showed several skeletal and spinal cord lesions, which were also biopsied and diagnosed as plasmacytomas.
