Simon Gottschalk (Sociology) is the author of a new book, Inter-face-work: Symbolic Interaction in the Digital Age, which has been published by Kurumuny Edizioni.
The rapid colonization of everyday life and consciousness by technologies of computer-mediated communication both multiplies the risks of miscommunication and compromises the performance of “facework” — those mechanisms we use to avoid and resolve interpersonal conflicts. Discussing the importance of inter-face-work (facework in online interaction), Gottschalk also proposes a critical look at the digital apparatus, the forms of interaction it promotes, and their consequences for social relations.
