Sanae El Ibrahimi (Epidemiology and Biostatistics), Niema Y. Beckford, and Eddy M. Virgen (both Public Health), along with Yunyu Xiao, Purdue University Indianapolis; Caroline D. Bergeron, Public Health Agency of Canada; and Matthew L. Smith, Texas A&M University, recently published an article, "Suicide Distribution and Trends Among Male Older Adults in the U.S., 1999−2018," in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. This study analyzed national mortality data to assess trends in suicide among male older adults. The study found that there is an increase in suicide rates among male older adults in the U.S., particularly after the 2007−08 economic recession and the patterns differed by different factors such as age, race, and ethnicity; urbanicity; and method of suicide. Beckford and Virgen are El Ibrahimi's student mentees.
