Professor Robert Futrell (Sociology) gave a keynote talk at the opening session for the Mobilization Conference on Protest, Resistance, and Democratic Retreat in San Diego, California, on June 9, 2023. The talk, “The Constellation of Extremist White Supremacism: A Cognitive-Emotional Approach,” explained how white supremacist extremism endures, the varied forms it takes, and its relationship to systemic racism, to demonstrate that today’s extremism is less a unique eruption than a continuation – and an acceleration – of longstanding U.S. white supremacy.
