Nicole Short (Psychology) recently published a study in Addictive Behaviors that examines prospective associations between insomnia symptoms and later prescription opioid and benzodiazepine use with colleagues Anna Austin and Becky Naumann from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The study found bidirectional associations between these constructs among a sample of >10,000 nationally representative adults. Specifically, insomnia symptoms predicted prescription opioid misuse eight to 10 years later, and prescription opioid and benzodiazepine misuse predicted insomnia symptoms eight to 10 years later.
