Manoj Sharma (Social and Behavioral Health; Internal Medicine) was a coauthor among the GBD 2021 Demographics Collaborators for the article titled, “Global age-sex-specific mortality, life expectancy, and population estimates in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1950–2021, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic: A comprehensive demographic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021,” published in The Lancet (Impact factor 168.9). The study funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation underscored the deleterious effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on life expectancy and noted increasing growth in lower-income countries with a global shift toward an aging population. The findings have implications for health care, economies, and health promotion programming across the world.
