Manoj Sharma (Social and Behavioral Health) coauthored an article titled “COVID-19 Infection among Family and Friends: The Psychological Impact on Non-Infected Persons” in the journal Brain Sciences. The article was written in collaboration with authors from New Mexico State University, Texas A&M University-Texarkana, University of Florida, and University of Houston-Victoria. The national study found that 54% of the U.S. population had a family member or friend infected with COVID-19, 48% had a hospitalized member, and 36% experienced a death among friends and family. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, or both were found to be statistically significantly higher in this group and emphasized the need for greater educational programming.
