Students Kenny Do and Eric Kawana (Medicine) published a systematic review in the Journal of Clinical Medicine discussing the use of bone wax for total hip and knee arthroplasties. Blood loss is a serious complication that patients can experience when undergoing these orthopedic procedures. This systematic review found that the use of bone wax in total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) decreased postoperative blood loss following surgery. Patients who received bone wax for hemostatic control required fewer blood transfusions as well. Overall, bone wax can be a great tool for controlling hemostasis in THA and TKA.
