Jungnam Kim (Counselor Education, School Psychology, and Human Services) published the manuscript “Hidden behind the model minority stereotype: Exploring disparities and the role of parent empowerment in Asian students’ college enrollment” in the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development. She worked alongside school counselor educators (Julia Bryan, Dana Griffin, and Gitima Sharma) to investigate the relationship between Asian parent empowerment and their children’s college enrollment using the High School Longitudinal Study, 2009. This study highlights the harm inherent in treating Asian students as monolithic and model minorities in the college-going process and the need for counselors and educators to facilitate parent empowerment to alleviate disparities in Asian students’ college-going.
