Julian Kilker (Journalism & Media Studies) and Augie Grant, a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of South Carolina, cohosted "Beyond Convergence," a conference sponsored by the two journalism schools. More than 50 scholars from across the nation shared their research in the field of technology and new media at the conference, which took place at UNLV in October. Among the universities participating were Syracuse and San Diego State universities. Robert Bellamy, a journalism and multimedia professor at Duquesne University who is a visiting professor at UNLV this year, provided the keynote speech, talking about what the media is not telling us. Conference sessions covered how mobile and social technology have changed journalism and some of the legal implications of those changes. They also covered cutting-edge media, such as using an iPad to reach a 3-year-old with autism. And, they explored theory and ethics in this age where Twitter and Facebook may already be past their primes.
