Professor John Curry (History) gave a paper titled, "A Divergent Manuscript: What MS Ayasofya 3188 Tells Us about Presenting the Ming Dynasty to the Ottoman Court," at a symposium convened at Ohio State University on May 20. The symposium was convened to honor the retirement of professor Jane Hathaway, who served as a dissertation advisor for all of the attendees from 1994 to the present. Curry's paper highlighted the discovery of a 16th-century autograph manuscript of Ali Ekber Khatayi, a merchant who traveled to the Ming Dynasty capital of China around 1500 and recorded an account of his experiences at the court of the Ottoman sultan Suleyman the Magnificent.
