Honors College student Jerwin Tiu was accepted to attend the 23rd annual Public Policy and Leadership Conference (PPLC) at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government this October in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
This year, PPLC received applications from 220 different colleges and universities, and invited 70 students in all to attend the three-day conference, which will provide an introduction to the field of public policy and include a series of distinguished speakers, policy workshops, and exposure to possible public service careers.
In applying to PPLC, Tiu reflected on his identity as a first-generation Asian American with roots in his Filipino and Chinese ancestry. He recognizes his privilege to be able-bodied and an American-born citizen with the opportunity to seek higher education at a Top-Tier institution. Reflecting on his time as a former pre-med student, his experiences growing up in poverty, and his multi-faceted identity, Tiu hopes to forge bridges of opportunity for students who belong to underrepresented groups. He hopes his time at PPLC will allow him to clarify his path in seeking to serve underserved communities in resource accessibility through user experience research while navigating intersections between public policy and business and, ultimately, support his dream of helping to lift up all marginalized communities through public policy in the world of digitalization.
