Jeff Schauer (History) gave a presentation at the annual meeting of the African Studies Association — in virtual form this year. His paper, "Developing the National Herds: The Making of National-Era Wildlife Policy in Zambia, 1964-1974," explored how attempts to imagine a radical repurposing of ecology, debates, and negotiations around overlapping uses of national parks, and backroom negotiations with rogue chiefs and recalcitrant hunters represented alternative possibilities that emerged during decolonization for the contours of national parks, the deployment of ecological sciences, and the locus of power over animals.
His paper, based on research at the National Archives of Zambia, was part of a panel including colleagues from Kenya and Tanzania on "Decolonizing Wildlife."
