Jeff Schauer (History) gave a paper at the conference of the American Historical Association in San Francisco. His paper, titled "A Lobby for Zambia: the Fortunes of the Zambian Brand and the Politics of Decolonization in Central Africa," explored the role of the Zambia Information Services in branding the country abroad, cultivating expertise from a variety of settings, and promoting the philosophy of Zambian humanism, while trying to reach "the last man in the last village." The paper examined the tensions in information/public relations work in the context of decolonization and nationalism, and was part of a panel titled "The Business of Independence: De/Recolonizing African Political and Cultural Economies," which included participants from Britain and the U.S.
Schauer also chaired a panel titled "Political and Environmental Histories of Neoliberal Conservation in East Africa" at the conference.
