Jason Flatt (Public Health) and colleagues recently published an article, "Medical Mistrust Mediates the Relationship Between Nonconsensual Intersex Surgery and Healthcare Avoidance Among Intersex Adults," in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine. We identified a relationship between nonconsensual surgery and health care avoidance among intersex adults and found that medical mistrust mediated this relationship. We also provide recommendations that health care providers consider health promotion interventions and trauma-informed care approaches, restricting nonconsensual surgeries, and building trust with intersex communities.
