Jacob D. Skousen (Educational Psychology, Leadership, and Higher Education) and colleagues at Brigham Young University published the article "Reflections About Educational Leadership: Leadership Lessons Learned From School Building Leaders at the End of a Career in Public Education" in the Journal of School Leadership. This qualitative study gathered insights from recently retired educational leaders to identify what is essential for effective school leadership. The research found five important themes—leadership roles, teamwork, relationships, developing others, and self-care — and suggests that self-care, currently missing from principal standards, is crucial for preparing and supporting leaders.
