Francisco Valenzuela (Life Sciences) a senior biology pre-professional student, recently was awarded the 2020 Student Service Award from the UNLV office of community engagement.
Among other activities, Valenzuela's service includes organizing a sock and underwear drive for The Shade Tree, a shelter for homeless and abused women and children in crisis; establishing a partnership and program with the Boys and Girls Club of Las Vegas; serving as the humanitarian chair of the UNLV Predental Society; volunteering at the UNLV Dental School Saturday Ferrin Clinics; and volunteering every month over the past five years at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, Three Square, and the predental high school outreach program.
Valenzuela is graduating in May and plans to attend dental school.
The office of community engagement awards are designed to honor those on campus who demonstrate a commitment to community engagement activity that aligns with community engagement goals. The awards specifically recognize service-learning, community-based research, community outreach, and student service.
