Erika Marquez (Environmental and Occupational Health) and Amanda Haboush-Deloye (Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy) received a $1.99 million grant from the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection to fund a "NVCLPPP Building Local Capacity" project.
With this funding, the project will implement the following strategies:
- Reduce barriers to lead screening by providing pediatric offices with Lead Care II instruments for onsite, capillary screening.
- Build capacity among pediatric practices to report blood lead level results and required demographic information to health authorities.
- Build capacity across the state to conduct environmental assessments to identify lead hazards in children's homes.
- Conduct educational outreach to medical providers and community members to promote childhood blood lead screening.
NVCLPPP (Nevada Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program) is a program within the Nevada Institute for Children's Research & Policy, which is housed at the UNLV School of Public Health. NVCLPPP aims to eliminate one of the most preventable environmental outcomes in children: lead poisoning. Visit the NVCLPPP website to learn more.
