Dr. Sonal Shah (Dental Medicine) presented two multi-institution collaborative sessions during the American Dental Education Association annual meeting last month. Her first presentation titled, "New Dental Specialties Are Possible: Oral Medicine, Orofacial Pain and Dental Anesthesiology," examined the results of a student and faculty survey distributed to the 68 accredited dental schools in the United States that assessed didactic and clinical exposure of dental students to these new, more medically-oriented dental specialties. Dr. Shah and her co-presenters are board-certified faculty who represent each of the three specialties.
The second presentation titled, "Utilization of the Patient Box in the Dental School Curriculum,” featured six speakers, each describing how they use the INBDE patient box in their courses. Shah incorporated the patient box into a few third-year oral pathology course cases, and presented student and faculty perspectives of utilizing the patient box.
