Dr. Robin Weltman and Jessica Immonen, Ph.D., (both Dental Medicine) co-authored, “The Significance of Mylohyoid Muscle Release (MMR) in the Vertical and Horizontal Ridge Augmentation Surgeries; Clinical and Human Cadaver Analyses of the Techniques,” which published February 26 in the journal Genes. The study reviewed, analyzed, and discussed three different techniques: (i) the finger sweep technique, (ii) the release of the mylohyoid muscle attachment on the lingual flap, and (iii) the mylohyoid preservation technique in three key anatomical zones. The results indicated that all three techniques are considered safe, but should be performed only by highly-experienced and trained clinicians.
