Deborah Arteaga (World Languages and Cultures) presented a paper, "Teaching Spanish Phonological Variation in a Beginning Medical Spanish Course," at the 78th Annual Conference of the South Central Modern Language Association in Houston.
This research is related to the courses that she teaches in educational outreach, and Spanish for health care professionals. Arteaga argued that health care providers in Las Vegas should learn to understand the pronunciation of the two Spanish dialects most commonly found in the Las Vegas Valley so that they can better communicate with their patients. She presented a framework for teaching this variation.
