Dr. David Glenn Weismiller (Medicine), was an invited speaker at the 3rd Emirates Family Medicine Society Congress held earlier this month in Dubai. One of his presentations was a plenary session on quaternary prevention titled "Choosing Wisely - First, Doing No Harm." The presentation focused on the Choosing Wisely initiative of the ABIM Foundation that seeks to advance a national dialogue on avoiding unnecessary medical tests, treatments, and procedures. Beginning in 2012, national organizations representing medical specialists have asked their members to identify tests or procedures commonly used in their field whose necessity should be questioned and discussed. The goal is to promote conversations between clinicians and patients by helping patients choose care that is supported by evidence, not duplicative of other tests or procedures already received, free from harm, and truly necessary.
