Clariana Ramos de Oliveira (Nursing) and colleagues have published a new study in the Journal of Child & Adolescent Mental Health. Using data from a birth cohort of 992 mother-child pairs in southern Brazil, the study found that elevated maternal depression, anxiety, and distress during the perinatal period were significantly associated with language, cognitive, and motor delays in children at 24 months. The findings highlight the urgent need for early maternal mental health support to improve developmental outcomes in low- and middle-income settings.
