Chelsea Heinbach, Brittany Paloma Fiedler, and Rosan Mitola (all Libraries) had an article, "Dismantling Deficit Thinking: A Strengths-based Inquiry into the Experiences of Transfer Students in and out of Academic Libraries," published by the open-access journal In the Library with the Lead Pipe. The article, which was co-authored by UNLV alum and former Library Literacy Fellow Emily Pattni, '15 BA English and '17 MED Health Education, examines the complicated narrative of the lagging transfer student, explores the harm of "deficit thinking," identifies how a strengths-based approach can inform librarianship, and shares data on transfer student experiences, challenges, and barriers. It offers readers an opportunity to consider how they might leverage transfer students’ strengths, rather than fixating on perceived shortcomings.
