Carmen Vallin (School of Life Sciences) was named Young Ambassador for the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). ASM is the largest international professional association in the Life Sciences in the world with 47,000 members. Nominated by professor Eduardo Robleto of Life Sciences, Vallin will join a group of more than 100 Young Ambassadors of Science across the U.S. and around the world. The mission of ASM ambassadors is to promote the field of microbiology and its benefits to society at the global and local levels. A Latinx doctoral student, Vallin was selected because of her leadership and a strong commitment to ASM's mission during her young career. Also, she has received awards from the National Science Foundation and ASM to support her research dissertation in the field of DNA repair and mutagenesis, and antibiotic resistance.
