Austin Horng-En Wang (Political Science) was invited by the University of St. Thomas at Houston to have a talk on April 6, titled "Taiwan’s 2024 Presidential and Legislative Election: Trends from Polls and Election Results" in the conference "The 2024 Taiwanese General Elections and the Next Phase of Trilateral Relationship between Taiwan, the United States, and China." In this talk, Wang analyzed the rise of the third party Taiwan People's Party and its implication to the future of US-China-Taiwan relationships. Specifically, Wang showed the empirical evidence of increasing polarization and anti-establishment, and also how the third party running for office influenced the voteshare of the two major parties. The new era of electoral competition implies a legislative gridlock on foreign policy and military spending in Taiwan for the next four years.
