Arumugam Jayaraman’s (Chemistry and Biochemistry) research engagement with researchers in Germany led to a publication in Wiley’s Angewandte Chemie International Edition journal. The work presents our endeavors to replicate the organometallic chemistry of transition metals using a boron-centered main-group compound called borylene. This work exhibits the capability of a low-valent boron compound to be reversibly involved in coordination chemistry and to activate strong bonds of small molecules under ambient temperature, hinting at the possibility of utilizing the less expensive and sustainable boron-based compounds as an alternative to transition metals in the field of catalysis and synthetic chemistry.
