Alain Bengochea (Educational & Clinical Studies) attended the Literacy Research Association (LRA) conference and presented at two paper sessions focusing on vocabulary instruction and sociodramatic play.
The vocabulary-focused content analysis titled "English Learners' Opportunities for Developing Vocabulary Knowledge in a CCSS Core Reading Program" highlighted how the directives embedding teacher-directed and student-centered supports in a Common Core State Standards-aligned core reading program were designed to target the multifaceted nature of vocabulary learning.
The play study titled "Literate Uses of Language in Play: Emergent Bilinguals’ Persuasive and Explanatory Discursive Resources for Negotiating Meaning and Authority" showcased how preschool-age bilingual children negotiated meaning and authority in play interactions with each other and their teachers through the strategic integration of persuasive and explanatory discourse features, showing emerging understandings of genre features underscored in Common Core State Standards goals for writing.
