H-1B Overview
H-1B is an immigration status which allows UNLV to employ individuals in certain “specialty occupations”. Before UNLV can hire someone in H-1B status, the university must first submit a petition to USCIS (Citizenship and Immigration Services) and, in most cases, must receive approval from USCIS prior to the employee beginning their H-1B employment.
If the prospective employee is outside the U.S, they may also require an H-1B visa stamp from the Department of State prior to entering the U.S. This is a complex and time-consuming process which requires departmental advanced planning and coordination with International Student and Scholar Services at least several months (6 months recommended!) prior to the planned hire start date.
